Allen Stallings Breaks Record as Greensboro College Puts Scare into Christopher Newport

(GREENSBORO, N.C.) — Senior linebacker Allen Stallings broke a single game school record for tackles with 26 as the Greensboro College football team gave USA South leading Christopher Newport a major scare on Saturday. The Pride jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and rallied back from a 27-10 deficit late but came up short by a final score of 27-22.
After forcing and recovering a fumble on the Captains opening possession, Greensboro’s Rahmel Workman raced 31-yards down the sideline to give The Pride a 7-0 lead with just over three minutes off the clock.

Christopher Newport evened the score at 7-7 later in the first quarter as Markeese Stovall plunged in for a one-yard touchdown with 2:39 showing on the clock. Stovall gave the Captains a 14-7 lead midway through the second quarter, this time finding the endzone from five-yards out.

The Pride tacked on a late field goal as Joe Langmeyer connected from 23-yards out to cut the deficit to 14-10 with 25 seconds remaining in the half. The field goal capped an impressive 17-play, 66-yard drive that ate up nearly eight minutes of the clock.

Christopher Newport responded, though, taking advantage of a big kick-off return to set-up a 45-yard boot by Stephen Denuel with no time left to head into the break on top 17-10.

Stovall added his third score of the day to provide the only points of the third quarter and push the Captain lead to 24-10. Denuel added a 32-yard field goal with 5:56 to go in the game to make the score to 27-10.

Greensboro was not finished yet, moving the ball 58-yards in eight plays to bring the score within 27-16. Marques Tyalor capped the drive with a one-yard reception from quarterback Ryan Throndset. The extra point attempt was blocked to leave the margin at 11.

The ensuing onside kick was recovered by Christopher Newport but a penalty gave The Pride another attempt. This time Workman came up with the ball for Greensboro to set up another scoring opportunity.

Unfortunately, The Pride were unable to convert, turning the ball over on downs. The luck turned on the Captains next drive, as The Pride recovered a fumbled hand off with 1:16 to play.

Greensboro needed just three plays to cover 33-yards and capatilize on the mistake as Throndset hit Dexter Russell Jr. for a 14-yard touchdown with 52 seconds to go. The two-point conversion failed, leaving the score at 27-22.

The Pride attempted another onside kick, but the ball fell into the hands of a Christopher Newport player. The Captains were able to run out the clock and put an end to Greensboro’s upset hopes.

Stallings highlighted the effort with a 26 tackle performance. He also added one sack, two tackles for loss and two forced fumbles. Chipping in defensively were Maurice Torain and Julian Cinotti with seven apiece.

On the offensive side of the ball, Warren Scott finished with 84 yards rushing on 19 carries. Throndset completed 25 of his 44 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns while Russell hauled in a game high 12 receptions for 97 yards and a score.

The Pride finished the day with 306 yards of total offense, 174 through the air and 132 on the ground, compared to 312 for Christopher Newport. Greensboro also accumulated 17 first downs on the day.

The Pride will hit the road next week in search of its first win as they take on Maryville at 1:30 p.m.
