High School basketball practice does begin today

Was on the phone with one of our area coaches today and he reminded me that high school basketball practice does begin today/Monday afternoon….

Have already heard about one girls’ scrimmge game coming up next Wednesday(November 9) with Southern Guilford at Page……

We will see several teams in full force as boys practice gets going this afternoon with Southwest Guilford, Grimsley and Smith, all done with their football seasons….

That means Southwest will have Ray Bridges, Herbert Bridges, Braxton Daye and all the key Cowboys joining Coach Guy Shavers for practice today…..Both Bridges with Braxton out there with Jordan Hanner, Terrell Leach, Brandon Clyburn, Keyford Langley and more as they open the door for the 2011 practice sessions…..SWG will have a special Cowboy Madness public workout for both the boys and the girls next Thursday night(Nov. 10) at the Cowboys’ gym…..

Grimsley can welcome in Charlie Jones, D.J. Reader, Kevin Walton, Diquan Purvis, Diwan Purvis, Brian Doss and others as they get going today….

Smith is loaded led by Tracy Gathings, Drew Williams, Adrian Wimbush, JT Williams, Cam Woods, Chris Woods, Valente Wallace and more…..

Northeast Guilford is still playing football, but no matter what, they should be stocked and they should be the area’s top team or at best, #2 right there with SWG……Jalen Hairston, Jesse Simpson, Bryce Benjamin, Trevone Williamson, Jalen Courts, Kia Shaw, Donavon Gilmore, Mohammed Tijani, Cameron Smith and Joey Link due at practice today and all back from last season…..Key loss Paris Scales….

Page will have Frank Eaves, Bryson Fonville, Justin Conner, and others today and when football is complete, they will get the services of James Summers, Brain Spain, Carter Stanley, possibly Orlando Hatfield and more…….

Norhern Guilford will have to wait on Daniel Downing, TJ Logan and John McBeth to finish their work in the fall, but the Nighthawks should be strong before long…..

Dudley will still have Sam Hunt, Alvah Phillip, DJ Alston, Jamar Weathers, Blair Houston, Anthony Hamlett today at practice and Darius Workman, plus Chris Register will join after football is complete….

Big question will be….What is going to be happening with Brian Seagraves, as the new head coach over at High Point Andrews and what about the new coaches at Western Guilford and Eastern Guilford??????

More on more teams, later on today and tonight……

Ragsdale has quite few guys and they return with some experience…… Eric Carter, Bryan Rouse, Joe Pantuso, Brandon Bowden, Jamar Clarke, Rashawn Blocker, Daniel Kanakanui, Eric Romer and Karson Redfern, coming back from a football injury……

Northwest Guilford has a lot of kids back for this season and they won’t ger PG Matt Pawlowski back until football is finished….Keaton Haack is back for his senior season and Cody Hylton, Hunter Clarey and Ryan Doerr provide outside shooting…..Haack is stong inside and he will surprise you, ’cause he can dunk with authority……Lots of guards and wing-type players on this team…..Another kid that can run and shoot and cover the floor is Jared Cockerham….Nick Powell, Kevin Parrish and Drew Coble are other guards that can contribute…..Chris Corbett is a tall guard and Anthony Harding is a kid that is still growing and he should be able to help out some inside with Keaton Haack…..

Eastern Guilford should be led by Brandon Hairston and Adam Gunn, two seniors that have been starting since they were sophomores….Gunn and Hairston will look to be getting some help from Quan Moss, Torey Evans, Kieran Chavis and Charles Beard…..Derrick Whitsett and Tyler Wolfe will also be called upon to step up for the Wildcats……

More on more teams tomorrow……

  1. Wolfe will not be helping the wildcats this season in basketball. He will be dearly missed and big a big component (well really all) of the outside game taken away. So hopefully someone can step up and fill the big shoes he left.

  2. Tyler Wolfe has taken his talents to the Burlington YMCA league in hopes of facing better competition.
