The Greensboro College men’s soccer team concluded its 2011 season on Tuesday with a 4-1 loss to Averett in the first round of the USA South tournament. The fifth seeded Cougars of Averett got revenge for a thrilling overtime victory by fourth seeded Pride during the regular season.

Averett made sure there would be no late game drama, notching two second half goals to increase the lead to 4-0. Greensboro netted its lone goal of the afternoon when Stenson Croom received a long throw in and hammered the ball off the post and past the keeper for the score.

The Pride kept it close in the shot count, firing 16 total shots compared to 20 for the Cougars. However, Averett held a commanding 9-3 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams attempted eight corner kicks for the game.

Tino Benitez recorded a team high four shots for Greensboro, with two coming on goal. Tyler Kuhn started in goal in place of the injured Woody Wilder and suffered his first defeat of the year.

Overall, The Pride made improvement during the 2011 campaign. Greensboro finished the year with a record of 4-7-5, highlighted by a five game unbeaten streak and stretch that saw The Pride lose just once in eight games.

For Greensboro seniors Joe Peluso, Chris Davis, Luigi Dipuorto and Joshua Shore, Tuesday’s game marked the final chapter in their stellar careers.
