College Men’s Golf Results – Guilford Takes 13th at Hummingbird Intercollegiate

SAPPHIRE, N.C. – Appalachian State University rallied from a seventh-place tie to win the the 2011 Hummingbird Intercollegiate Tuesday at the par-71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley. After shooting 292 in Monday’s opening round, the Mountaineers shot 11-under-par 273 in Tuesday’s final round to finish two strokes ahead of the 19th-ranked University of Alabama-Birmingham (287-280-567).

Guilford College shot 295 Tuesday and finished 13th in its final fall event with a 299-295-594. The Quakers were one of two non-NCAA Division I schools in the 17-team field.

First-round individual leader Kristopher Gray from Gardner-Webb University claimed medalist honors by following his four-under 67 with a three-under 68 Tuesday. Gray paced the 93-golfer field with 25 par scores and nine birdies through his 36 holes. He was one-over after four holes Tuesday, but shot four-under the rest of the way to defeat UAB’s Paul Dunne (71-66-137) by two strokes. Appalachian State’s Casey Komline tied the tournament record with a six-under 65 Tuesday and placed third at 138.

Guilford’s Noah Ratner (Asheville, N.C./Asheville) saw his streak of three straight medalist honors end after shooting 74-73-147 for a share of 31st place. Teammate Mitch Robinette (Charlotte, N.C./Grace Academy) carded the Quakers’ low round of the tournament Tuesday with an even-par 71 and also shot 147. Senior Mat Hennick placed 42nd at 74-75-149 and rookie Drew Thompson came home in a share of 57th place with a 75-76-151. Junior J.T. Thomas (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) shot 79-78-157 and finished 85th.

The Quakers, ranked first in the latest Golfstat.com NCAA Division III Head-to-Head Ratings, are back in action Feb. 27 at the Pine Needles Intercollegiate.
