ELON — Freshman Sam Coffer(Northern Guilford High School) of the Elon University women’s basketball team got to do what she has wanted to do since she was a child — step onto the floor and play a collegiate basketball game. She lived the motto that the Phoenix strength and conditioning coach Aaron Craft is fond of saying … “Live the Dream.”

Elon defeated Division II opponent Wingate 73-67 in an exhibition game Sunday afternoon at Alumni Gym, a warm-up to Saturday’s regular-season opener at home against Virginia Union.

“It was an awesome feeling,” Coffer said. “We had good competition, and now we’re ready to play ball and build on what we had (in this outing).”

Coffer, ended up with 11 points and nine rebounds off the bench, and cut a Wingate lead in half with a 3-pointer and free throw.
