ELON — With so much swirling around the Western Alamance football team, which was coming off a devastating loss to end the regular season and facing a potential rematch with a conference foe in the next round, there was a matter to address last Friday night.
“We had to get back in the groove,” receiver B.J. Bunn said.
Consider that done as the Warriors dispatched visiting Overhills 34-7 in the opening round of the Class 3-AA state playoffs.
Bunn caught two first-quarter touchdown passes from Nigel Carlton and the Warriors pulled away with three third-quarter touchdowns in what might have been the last home game for a decorated senior class.
“The emotions were very high,” senior linebacker Michael Maness said. “We didn’t want to go out any other way.”
Next, the Warriors (9-3) will go back to Northern Guilford, where eight nights ago they were slapped around in a 42-7 loss that decided the Mid-State 3-A Conference championship.
“We put that game behind us and it’s playoffs and we’re 1-0,” Bunn said.
Carlton completed 14 of 24 passes for 233 yards, while cornerback Brock Deatherage was a menace on defense.
