Oak Hill came into the Flora MacDonald contest with an 8-0 record and their 5th game in the past 7 days. As I stated in yesterday’s newsletter, Flora MacDonald was a formidable opponent and has enough outside shooters to make the game interesting and they did just that for 3 quarters of play before the depth and overall talent simply wore down the visitors from North Carolina. Oak Hill came away with a 26 point victory by winning 85-59, but the Warriors as a team looked mentally and physically tired. With Thanksgiving break right around the corner and the players getting in all their tests before the break, it was obvious Oak Hill simply didn’t have that same spark in their step as in previous games, especially on the defensive side of the floor. That being said, Flora MacDonald did a good job of spreading the floor and utilized the high post screen and roll effectively along with using the dribble drive to kick out to open perimeter shooters who shot at a very high percentage for the first three quarters.

In addition, Flora MacDonald did a stellar job of getting back in transition and did an admirable job of eliminating many easy baskets for Oak Hill. Oak Hill played more of a half court game and at times ran their offense to perfection getting the shot they desired. While most in attendance and coaches would agree, it wasn’t the best team performance but the stat sheet really wasn’t that bad.

Leading the way for Oak Hill was 6’3 Senior SG D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera with 27 points going 9-17 from the floor and 6-10 from the free throw line. He also had 3 timely steals and is probably the best on the ball defender on the team. 5’11 Senior PG Tyler Lewis enjoyed another double-double by scoring 15 points and dishing out a team high 15 assists. He went 5-7 from the floor and 4-5 from the free throw line and only committed two turnovers for the game. 6’5 Senior SG Jordan Adams tallied 14 points going 5-12 from the floor and 2-2 from the free throw line. For the season, Adams is perfect from the free throw line going 20-20. Adams also pulled down 7 rebounds with 6 of them being on the defensive end of the floor. 7’0 Senior Center AJ Hammons had another solid performance by scoring 12 points and getting 8 rebounds while blocking 4 shots. Hammons went 5-8 from the floor and made some big time jump hook shots in the paint. Hammons is underrated as a passer and made a few nice passes to open teammates underneath. While he only had one assist, he could have enjoyed more if his teammates could have finished better. 6’5 Senior WF Damien Wilson came off the bench and added a spark with 9 points and grabbing 5 rebounds. Wilson went 4-4 from the floor and used his slashing ability to get to the rim at ease. Rounding out the balance of the scoring attack was RJ Curington with 5 points, Darion Clark with 2 points and Jordan Tebbutt with 1 point.

Oak Hill shot 30-55 shots for the game for 54% while going only 18-31 from the free throw line for 58%. Again, the Warriors did a masterful job of securing the basketball as they dished out 20 assists while only committing 5 turnovers for the game. Oak Hill is now 9-0 for the season and will play Thursday night against Harrison County HS (Georgia) before leaving for Thanksgiving break. The team will return to school on Monday, November 28th before returning to action on the 30th against Thomasville Prep.
