(GREENSBORO, N.C.) — The Greensboro College men’s basketball team held off a second half charge by the visiting Piedmont Lions to pull away for an 89-77 victory on Sunday. The Pride, who were playing for the first time in over a week, raced out of the gates early and used a pair of second half runs to down the pesky Lions.
Greensboro wasted little time getting to work on Sunday, grabbing a 14-6 lead less then six minutes into the game. A lay-up by Chakiris Moss at the 8:04 mark gave The Pride their largest first half margin at 29-15. Piedmont, slowly closed the deficit, however, pulling back to within in 47-41 at the break.
The Lions continued the momentum into the second frame, taking its first lead since the opening minutes of the contest at 53-51. A free throw, followed by a lay-up by Brock Moorman sparked life back into Greensboro, igniting a 14-4 run that left The Pride on top 65-57 with 12:23 to play.
The game went back and forth for the next six minutes until a free throw by Moss pushed the Greensboro lead back into double digits at 74-64. WIth 3:05 remaining in the game, T.J. Holman buried a jumper that concluded a 14-2 spurt with The Pride on top 83-66. Greensboro cruised to the finish from there for an 89-77 win.
Moorman led all scorers on the day with 24 points on 9-13 shooting, as six members of The Pride reached double figures in scoring, including all five starters. Luqman Tijani contributed 14 points, Holman had 13, Andre Porter added 12, Devonta Davis tallied 11 and Moss finished with ten. Moorman also led Greensboro with five rebounds on the day.
Overall, The Pride connected on 61.1% of their field goals and went 4-9 from three-point territory. Piedmont, meanwhile, converted 57.7% of its field goal chances and finished 5-13 from beyond the arc. Greensboro held a slight 26-25 advantage on the boards and forced 27 turnovers.
The Pride will next be in action on December 3 when they travel to LaGrange for a 2 p.m. showdown.
