College Men’s Basketball Final – Bridgewater 71, Guilford 54

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Cody Griffith (Pembroke, Va./Giles County) made six three-pointers and poured in a game-high 25 points to power visiting Bridgewater College past Guilford College, 71-54, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men’s basketball game Saturday.

The victory marked Bridgewater’s (3-3, 1-1 ODAC) first over Guilford since 2009 and their first in the Quakers’ Ragan-Brown Field House since 2001.

Griffith had three trifectas in the first three minutes, which led to an early 11-2 Eagles’ lead. The margin grew to 11 midway through the frame before the Quakers (5-2, 0-1 ODAC) drew to within 32-26 at halftime. The difference in the first half was Bridgewater’s six three pointers and Guilford’s none.

Griffith stuck another three and Aaron Adams (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) scored a fast-break layup off a Ronnie Thomas (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) steal that opened a 41-29 edge early in the second half. Guilford’s Josh Pittman (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) scored his first points with a jumper and a three-pointer during a 9-0 Quakers’ run that pulled the hosts within 41-38 with 15:57 left.

After trading baskets for a couple minutes, Bridgewater’s Daniel McClain (Falls Church, Va./Marshall) (8 points) scored back-to-back buckets during an important 10-0 run midway through the second half. The Quakers made it a 56-49 game on a Carson Sullivan (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic (Pennsylvania)) basket with 5:34 to play, but Bridgewater rookie Benaiah Wise answered with a three that restored the Eagles’ 10-point lead.

Guilford made just two field goals in the final five minutes, during which time Bridgewater outscored the Quakers, 15-5.

Adams finished with 10 points for Bridgewater, which shot 10-for-23 from three-point range. Thomas added four points, a game-high nine assists and a team-best six boards. Bridgewater outrebounded Guilford, 38-33, and had 10 different players in the scoring column.

Sullivan’s 14 points paced the Quakers, who suffered their second straight setback. Gabriel Lowder (Yadkinville, N.C./North Forsyth) scored 11 and Pittman finished with eight, all in the second half. Brad Monroe (Asheboro, N.C./Eastern Randolph) had four points, a game-high eight rebounds and five assists.

Guilford visits league-rival Washington and Lee University Wednesday (12/7) at 7:30 p.m.
