The Dunk Heard Round The World: NW @ SW
It was a special night here at the Ranch as the Jim Coggins Gymnasium made its debut as the Vikings of Northwest made the short trip to battle the Cowboys of Southwest. The emotions ran high, as Jordan Hanner hit the first bucket in the gym to start it out 3-0. But the Vikings didn’t feel any sympathy as they went bucket for bucket and executed well and held a 17-15 edge after the first. The Vikings continued their strong play and had a firm grip on the game, but only managed to hold a slim 29-28 lead at the break. The Cowboys came out motivated to not go down without a fight. They scored the first basket of the second half and the Vikings were quick to respond with a free throw of their own. The teams traded one more basket each, and then it happened. In transition Braxton Daye of the Cowboys threw down a thunderous dunk over a Viking defender that shook the gymnasium. It was only 2 points but the entire game changed. This sparked the remainder of the quarter as the pressure of the Cowboys helped them race away to a 56-39 lead after the third. The fourth quarter had the sharp shooting Vikings stay within reason for a few minutes, but the Cowboys were just took much as they cruised to a 78-56 conference victory. The Vikings were lead by Hunter Clary’s 22 points. The Cowboys were lead by Brandon Clyburn (21), Jordan Hanner (18), Terrell Leach (16), and Braxton Daye (13).
