More on Southeast Guilford Falcons win on Tuesday at the NewBridge Bank Tournament

WALLBURG….Central Davidson girls’ coach Kevin Hudson was at a loss for
words.

Coming in with a world of momentum, the Spartans couldn’t get anything
going and suffered a 51-26 loss at the hands of a very good Southeast
Guilford team in the first round of the NewBridge Bank Christmas Classic
at Ledford on Tuesday afternoon.
“By far, the most disappointing performance in a long time for me,”
Hudson said after the lopsided loss. “We talked about being ready to
play.

“We haven’t played in a week and a half. And it hurt us, it really hurt
us.”

The Falcons jumped out to an 11-1 lead midway through the first quarter
and the Spartans had no response. Kara Shutt’s 3-pointer from the top of
the key capped the early spurt, and Central collectively grew more and
more frustrated as the game wore on. Missing a tidal wave of layups and
turning the ball over far too often didn’t help.

“You’ve got to hand it to Southeast Guilford. They came out and took it
to us,” Hudson added.

That was very nice for Falcons coach Shawyn Newton, whose team improved
to 10-1. “Christmas Tournament, not seeing the girls for a couple of
days, you never know what to expect,” Newton said. “Last year, we were
up 16 points (against Central) and lost.

“So we knew this time around, we had to keep the pedal to the metal.”

The Falcons certainly did that. Kenya Hailey’s putback at the end of the
first quarter extended the lead to 17-3, and Shutt’s runner in the lane
made it 26-7 with 1:30 left in the half. Hailey scored 10 of her 14
points in the third quarter as the Falcons opened up a 42-13 cushion,
and the Spartans had no answer.

“I didn’t think that once we got down, I didn’t think that we thought we
could battle back,” Hudson continued. “And that was what was so
disappointing to me. I thought we were better than that.”

Paige Chavis led the Spartans (7-2) with 12 points. Central will face
North Davidson in a consolation game at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. Southeast will face East Davidson in the semifinals
at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
