Guilford College Quakers mens hoops goes to (9-4) with win at Emory & Henry

EMORY, Va. – Josh Pittman (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) scored six of his
team-high 19 points in overtime of Guilford College’s 58-57 Old Dominion
Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win at Emory & Henry College
Wednesday night.

The Quakers (9-4, 3-1 ODAC) prevailed despite Emory & Henry’s (6-6, 0-4
ODAC) multiple second-half comebacks. The Wasps rallied from separate
second-half deficits of nine points and eight points and overcame 4-for-29
first-half field-goal shooting.

Malcolm Green sparked the Wasps’ rallies with 13 of his game-high 20
points. Emory & Henry made 12 second-half free throws to Guilford’s four
and outrebounded the Quakers, 15-10. The Wasps’ Armando Murrell forced
extra time with a free throw with 16 seconds left in regulation. He could
have given the Wasps the lead, but missed his second free throw. The
Quakers nabbed the rebound and called time out, but did not get a good
final look, setting up their first overtime contest of season.

Pittman took over in the extra frame, scoring on each of Guilford’s first
three possessions. His fourth steal of the game set up his uncontested
layup that opened a 56-52 edge 1:14 into overtime. Emory & Henry managed
just two free throws in the frame before Green’s three-pointer at the 1:09
mark drew the Wasps to within 58-57.

A PIttman miss and Guilford turnover at the other end let Emory & Henry
play for the final shot, but Damian Edwards’ three-pointer with five
seconds left drew iron and Pittman collected the rebound. He was promptly
fouled with 0.9 seconds remaining. Pittman missed the first shot and
intentionally missed the second, which let the clock run out.

Guilford outscored Emory & Henry, 28-10, in the paint, but Emory & Henry
made eight three-pointers compared to Guilford’s one. Carson Sullivan
(Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Christian) made that three late in regulation
and finished with 13 points, plus six rebounds. Brad Monroe (Asheboro,
N.C./Eastern Randolph) contributed eight points and seven rebounds. Will
Freeman chipped in eight points off the bench and Justin Stafford
(Winston-Salem, N.C./Calvary Baptist) finished with five points and a
team-high nine rebounds.

Edwards made a game-high four three-pointers and finished with 15 points.
Kyle Sensabaugh contributed a game-high 12 rebounds.

Guilford visits league-rival Lynchburg College Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
