Women’s College Basketball Story and Boxscore: Guilford , Virginia Wesleyan

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College used a strong second half to defeat visiting Virginia Wesleyan College, 75-66, and hand the Marlins their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) loss of the season. Junior Brittany Atwater tied a career-high with 11 assists to go along with her 11 points. With the win the Quakers (9-2, 6-0 ODAC) move into sole possession of first place in the conference.

The game was tightly contested throughout, with neither team holding more than a three point advantage through the first 13 minutes of the game. Virginia Wesleyan (9-3, 6-1 ODAC) surged at the nine minute mark and built an 11 point advantage before Guilford’s Jazlyn Gibbs rallied the team scoring eight of her 10 first half points to help cut the lead to 34-30 at halftime.

After giving up the first basket of the second half the Quakers went to their low-post trio of Jaclyn Nucci, Morgan King and Gabby Oglesby to pull themselves back into the game. Nucci and King controlled the boards with a game-high 12 and 6 rebounds respectively while Oglesby continued her excellent play scoring 16 of her game-high 24 points in the second half and grabbing eight rebounds.

The Marlins maintained their lead until the 3:02 mark of the second-half when a jumper by Oglesby gave the Quakers a 66-64 lead that they would not relinquish. Guilford once again was clutch at the free throw line hitting 7-10 to end the game.

Guilford’s Gibbs finished the game with 20 points and seven rebounds. The Quakers shot 43.9 percent from the field and 70 percent from the
free-throw line.

The Marlins were led by Kristen Blalock, who scored a team-high 23 points half, and Sarah Seipp, who contributed 15 points in the losing effort.

Guilford returns to action Tuesday (1/10) on the road against ODAC-foe Randolph College at 7:00 p.m.
