Women’s Basketball at RCC
Stewart McClintock of Greensboro has been hired as head coach for the resurrected women’s basketball program at Rockingham Community College. The college operated the program from 1999-2002 and now joins 12 other community colleges statewide who offer basketball to their female athletes.
“We have had questions from students about women’s basketball, we have a great facility for it, and now we have a young and eager coach,” said Dean Myrick, director of student life and athletics. “I believe once we get the program started, it will take off and coach McClintock will compliment the great coaching staff we have here for our various sports programs. Our coaches do a great job for this college and positively influence our student-athletes.”
McClintock comes to RCC after serving under Bobby Allison as assistant women’s basketball coach at Guilford Technical Community College in Greensboro during the 2011-12 season in which the team ranked as high as fifth in the country in the National Junior College Athletic Association.
“When looking at Guilford, Rockingham, Alamance and other surrounding counties, this is a basketball rich area,” said McClintock. “I’m looking forward to capitalizing on that talent and building an exciting women’s basketball program at RCC.”

This will be a perfect fit for girls whom want to continue their pursuit in basketball from this area. So often too many kids and their parents think that their kid is D1 material and unfortunately it does not happen. This will give them a chance if they have the goods to show what they are capable of for many other colleges such as D2 and D3. It does not mean that they will automatically make Rockingham squad just because they show up. It means it gives them a platform to try and move forward both academically and athletically if they have the desire. This should become a great move for this area and kids should not frown when they see coaches from Rockingham showing up at their highschool and AAU events. They should welcome it and give it the same respect just as they would do any other schools that appear to have a bigger name.
This is great for women’s basketball in the area and for the girls that might not get another opportunity to play college basketball.
I wish Rockingham and GTCC both would add more sports.
How about one or both of these schools adding cross country/ distance running for track?
Inexpensive sport as far as both equipment and team travel are concerned.
There are plenty of kids around the area that would be interested if given the opportunity.
