College Women’s Basketball Final – Randolph-Macon 77, Guilford 68

ASHLAND, Va. – Taylor Wieczorek scored 16 of her game-high 18 points in the second half of Randolph-Macon College’s 77-68 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women’s basketball win over league-leader Guilford College Friday night.

Wieczorek, who also grabbed nine rebounds, scored the game-tying and go-ahead buckets on consecutive possessions, triggering a 15-4 game-ending run. Guilford’s Brittany Atwater scored with 4:49 remaining to give Guilford its final lead, 64-62, with 4:49 left in regulation. Wieczorek answered with a jumper at the other end to tie the game for the 13th and final time. Following a Guilford turnover, Wieczorek scored again to give Randolph-Macon the lead for good at 66-64 with 4:21 left. Sarah Parsons scored seven of her 11 points off the bench and Wieczorek added six in the Yellow Jackets’ (11-9, 9-6 ODAC) decisive run.

Guilford’s Brittany Drew hit a three-pointer just before halftime to tie the score at 33-33, but Randolph-Macon opened the second half with a 14-6 run that included six points by Wieczorek. The Quakers (15-4, 12-2 ODAC) reeled off the next nine points to regain the lead. Neither side led by more than three points until the Yellow Jackets pulled away in the final minutes.

Maggie Roy scored 15 points for Randolph-Macon and had five of the Yellow Jackets’ 13 steals. Christina Phelps added 12 points, which helped Randolph-Macon’s reserves outscore their counterparts, 30-17. The hosts forced Guilford into a season-high 26 turnovers, which led to 23 Yellow Jackets’ points.

Jazlyn Gibbs and Gabby Oglesby both scored a team-high 15 points for Guilford. Oglesby grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and blocked three shots. Teammate Morgan King also notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. Drew tied her career high with 13 points and Atwater finished with nine, all in the second half.

The Quakers turn around to play at Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday (2/4) at 4:00 p.m. With a 74-50 home win over Emory & Henry College Friday, the Marlins improved to 15-4 (12-2 ODAC). Both the Quakers and Marlins are a half game behind Eastern Mennonite for first place in the ODAC standings.
