The Greensboro College baseball team dropped a pair of games at Berry on opening day. A late comeback doomed the The Pride in game one before a one hit shut-out stifled Greensboro in the second game.
The Pride jumped out to an 8-2 lead after 4.5 innings of play in the opener, but saw Berry rally with seven runs in the final three innings to pull out a 9-8 victory.
Greensboro struck first with a single run in the first as Michael Cobb doubled and later scored on an error. The Pride added five in the third to push the margin to 6-0. After the first two batters recorded outs, Greensboro pounded out five hits – all singles- highlighted by a two RBI single by Bill Wooding.
Berry answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to cut the deficit to 6-2. The Pride got the runs back in the fifth, using a pair walks, an error and a wild pitch to score two runs and extend the lead to 8-2.
It was all down hill after that, however, as Berry notched one run in the bottom of the fifth and three in the sixth to set-up the last inning heroics. Berry plated three runs in the final inning, with the game winner coming on a bases loaded walk.
Both teams finished with 11 hits for the game, while Berry committed three mistakes to Greensboro’s one.
At the plate, Wooding and Seth Caison each had a team high two hits with Wooding leading the way with two RBI.
Jacob Cadle made the start on the mound for The Pride, going 5.0 innings. Cadle allowed three runs – one earned – on five hits with one strikeout. Grant Kelley suffered the loss in 0.2 innings of work.
In game two, Trent Hills tossed a one-hit gem to lead Berry to a 5-0 win. The Pride had only three baserunners for the game, with the lone hit being supplied on a single by Wooding in the seventh.
Berry posted two runs in the first, a run in the second and two in the sixth off of starter John Atkins and Daniel Longworth. Atkins took the loss with five innings pitched, allowing three runs – two earned – on six hits.
The sweep drops Greensboro to 0-2 on the young season. The weekend series is scheduled to wrap-up on Sunday with a single game.
