Elon Posts First Ever Division I Win Over East Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team won its fourth match of the season on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 15, topping instate rival East Carolina, 6-1, in the Lady Pirates’ home opener at the ECU Tennis Complex.

Elon improves to 4-2 on the year with the win while the Lady Pirates drop to 2-5. The win is Elon’s first over ECU in the Division I era (0-11 in previous matches).

The doubles team of Jordan Johnston and Frida Jansaker improved to 6-0 on the year and helped the Phoenix win the doubles point, topping ECU’s Danielle Terpko and Yilian Zhang, 8-0.

Johnston clinched the match for the maroon and gold in the No. 1 singles position later in the match, topping Zhang in two sets, 6-3, 6-1.

Bryn Khoury won her fifth straight match in impressive fashion against the Lady Pirates, recording a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Neena Wanko.

Viviana Stavreva and Jansaker also picked up singles points for the Phoenix after defeating Renata Bakieva and Terpko, respectively. Stavreva won 6-4, 6-1, while Jansaker picked up a 7-5, 6-1 decision in her match.

Rookie Maria Camara Ruiz also picked up a singles point for Elon after claiming a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Dana Gray in the No. 6 position.

Elon returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 21, when the Phoenix welcomes instate rival Charlotte to the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center for a 2 p.m. match.
