College Golf News – Guilford Men Second After First Round at Pine Needles

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – Freshman Cory Howard shot a one-over-par 72 to lead 19th-ranked LaGrange College to a three-stroke lead over top-ranked Guilford College and six other teams after Monday’s opening round of the Pine Needles Intercollegiate.

LaGrange shot 297 and put four golfers among the top-13 Monday, including the Keener brothers, Hudson and Hunter. Hudson, a two-time PING All-American, carded a three-over 74, one better than Hunter’s 75. The Panthers’ David Hensley sits 13th overall after shooting 76 Monday.

Guilford senior Dusty Roberts (Reidsville, N.C./Rockingham County) posted the Quakers’ best score, a two-over 73 that stands third in the field. Noah Ratner shot 74 and Andrew Thompson 75 for coach Corey Maggard’s club, which shot 300 on the day.

Wilson Anthony’s two-over 73 led Washington and Lee University, which holds third place at 305. John Phillips of Bridgewater College and Cape Fear Community College’s Tommy Raddin also share third at 73.

The teams conclude play with 18 holes Tuesday (2/28).
