College Men’s Golf Results – Guilford Wins Pine Needles Intercollegiate

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C.- Guilford College’s men’s golf team took advantage of pleasant conditions and erased a three-stroke deficit to win the 2012 Pine Needles Intercollegiate Tuesday. The victory at the par-71, 7,015-yard Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club marked the Quakers’ third of the season.

Top-ranked Guilford trailed #17 LaGrange College by three strokes after shooting 300 in Monday’s first round, but stormed back with a 290 Tuesday to win the seven-team event by 24 shots. LaGrange shot 318 and stumbled to a third-place tie with Washington and Lee University (305-310-615). Led by tournament medalist John Phillips, Bridgewater College shot 302 Tuesday and finished in second at 614.

Guilford placed all five golfers among the top-15 in the 37-man field, including four In the top nine. Junior Noah Ratner carded the Quakers’ low score Tuesday with a one-under 70, which helped him to second place at 74-70-144. Teammate Dusty Roberts (Reidsville, N.C./Rockingham County) shaved a stroke off his first-round score and placed third (73-72-145). Rookie Mitch Robinette was sixth (78-73-151) and classmate Drew Thompson (75-77-152) ninth. Sophomore Alex Wise (Eden, N.C./Carlisle School (Va.)) was 15th with a 79-75-154 in his 2011-12 varsity debut.

First-round leader Cody Pestun of Wesley College shot 74 Tuesday after an opening-round 71 and shared third place at 145.

Coach Corey Maggard’s club is back in action March 12-13 at the Taylor Made-Adidas Invitational in Dataw Island, S.C.
