College Baseball Final – #10 Piedmont 3, Guilford 1

DEMOREST, Ga. – Sophomore Matt Lisk fanned six and scattered three hits over eight innings in Piedmont College’s 3-1 win over visiting Guilford College Wednesday night.

Piedmont, ranked 10th in this week’s D3baseball.com Top 25 Poll, improved to 11-3. Guilford drops to 9-6 after losing its first road game of the season.

Kyle Davis’ two-out, two-run triple highlighted the Lions’ three-run second inning that provided all the runs Lisk needed. Davis came across on a balk for the game’s third run against Quakers’ starter Justin Morrison (2-2).

Guilford scored an unearned run in the first inning on Kent Peterson’s RBI single. Lisk retired the next 16 straight batters before John Macon Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Western Guilford (Western Carolina)) singled with two out in the sixth. Peterson followed with a walk and the runners advanced to second and third on two wild pitches. Piedmont second baseman Tim Nunez made a diving stop on a Zack Montalbano grounder up the middle and fired to first for the inning’s third out.

Ed Cook relieved Lisk in the ninth and struck out the side for his fourth save of the season.

The teams meet again Thursday at 1:00 p.m. in the final game of a two-night set.
