HPU Baseball Picks Up 9-2 Road Win Over North Carolina A&T

The High Point University baseball team won its fourth game in a row, topping North Carolina A&T 9-2 on Tuesday at War Memorial Stadium in Greensboro, N.C. Junior Ryan Retz got the win and junior Willie Medina went 3-5 with two doubles and two RBI.

“It was nice to jump out to a lead early,” said head coach Craig Cozart. “Then adding three in the ninth sealed the game. Retz was really solid on the mound, getting us late in the game and then our bullpen continued to do a good job. This was a good game to prepare us for the trip to Missouri.”

Junior Ryan Retz went 6-1/3 innings for his second win of the season. He allowed two runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts. He improves his record to 2-2 for the season.

The Panthers improve to 12-7 with the win while North Carolina A&T falls to 6-11.

Medina doubled and Sal Pezzino walked in the first inning. Both runners took off for a double steal and the North Carolina A&T catcher threw the ball past the third baseman, allowing Medina to score and give HPU a 1-0 lead.

Ryne Rush led off the second with a triple Spencer Angelis drove him home with a single to rightfield. Medina picked up the first of two RBI in the game with a single to score Angelis. HPU led 3-0 at the end of two innings.

N.C. A&T snapped HPU’s scoreless streak at 23 innings, putting two runs on the board in the third inning. The Aggies stacked four singles and a fielder’s choice in the inning to push across two runs. Retz got out of the inning with a grounder back to the mound and a foul pop up to Pezzino at first base.

Medina added an RBI double in the fourth and Angelis drove in his second run of the game with a single in the fifth.
Retz left the game with two runners on and one out in the seventh inning. Freshman Joe Goodman got a double play off the bat of Andre McKoy to end the inning. Goodman went 1-2/3 innings with two strikeouts.

Medina finished the game 3-5 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored. Angelis went 2-5 with three RBI and Rush had two hits with one RBI and a run scored.

The High Point University baseball team will travel to Missouri for a three-game series with the Tigers. Friday’s first pitch is set for 7 p.m.
