GREENSBORO, N.C. – Casey Mann’s (Reisterstown, Md./North Carroll) two-run single keyed Guilford College’s six-run seventh inning that gave the Quakers a 9-3 nonconference baseball win over visiting Eureka College Wednesday.

The Quakers (11-8) rallied from an early deficit after the Red Devils (0-3) took a 2-0 first-inning lead on Jordan Hodel’s two-out, two-run double that Guilford left field Jordan Slate (Lexington, N.C./North Davidson) lost in the sun. Hodel scored an unearned run in the top of the fourth inning against Guilford starter Lou Trosch (Charlotte, N.C./East Mecklenburg) that opened a 3-1 lead.

John Macon Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Western Guilford (Western Carolina)) led off the home fourth with his team-leading eighth homer of the season and the Quakers tied the game one inning later on Mann’s RBI triple to right.

Mann (3-5, 3 RBI) had the big hit in Guilford’s seventh, which opened a 6-3 Quakers’ lead and chased Eureka starter Bryan Meyer after 6.1 solid innings in his season debut. Four of Guilford’s seventh-inning runs were unearned due to a throwing error by shortstop Grant DeWitt that scored Justin Pittman (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) (2-4) with the go-ahead run. Pittman led off the seventh with a triple to left center.

Trosch worked around two fifth-inning singles before giving way to rookie Avery Rogers (Salisbury, N.C./East Rowan) (1-0), who fanned three in two scoreless frames for his first college victory. Senior Micah Winterstein gave up just one hit in the final two frames.

Hodel finished with three hits and two RBI for the Red Devils, who continue their season-opening swing Thursday at Greensboro College.
