Previous All-Area Players of the Year

While we await the announcement of the 2012 Area Player of the year whom have done a
remarkable job during their tenure in highschool, here is a list of some past
performers whom help to set the bar. As each year pass we will continue to add that
present student athlete accomplishments and hope that it will inspire and motivate
the future student athletes whom names will be added. These student atheletes
performances were done through hard discipline work and they thus became the
selection for that particular year.

2012: still pending

2011: Miranda Jenkins: Eastern Guilford: 24.1 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 5.3 apg, 4.6 spg, 3.2
bpg: The smart and gritty floor leader led a team that was predicted to win 7 games
to an amazing 23-6 record and a Conference Tournament Championship win over Northern
Guilford in double overtime 56-52 with 37 points and 10 rebounds. The Wildcat
undisputed leader scored 698 points during the season. Her best performances came
against the toughest teams and competition. 41 pts against North Carolina A&T
signee and Western Harnett Star Ariel Bursey. 38 and 21 points against Orange star
Bria Berry-Holly. 37,24,23 points against Elon signee and Northern Guilford star
Samantha Coffer. 33 points against VCU signee and Thomasville star Christina Carter.
31 points against Wingate signee and Southeast Guilford star Ayshia Mcneil. 30 and
21 points against Elon signee and Rockingham star Autumn Carter. 29,28, 27 points
against Maryland Eastern-shore signee Jayla Steward
and Chowan signee Shante Springs of BurlingtonWilliams. 27 points against Campbell
signees and State 4A Champs Southwest Guilford Zena Lovett and Jessica Pone. Her
39.5 playoff average and 32.6 ppg over the final six games of her highschool career
are the highest marks this area has ever seen.In previous seasons against
formidable opponents she has had 33 points against Goldsboro and Fayetteville
State signee Millicent Konegay. 27 points against Northwest Hailfax-Oak Hill and
North Carolina State signee Lakeesa Daniels. 25,23 points against Grahams and
MarsHill signee Beth Miller and Belmont Abbey signee Kiki Allen. 25, 23 against
Reidville and Elon signee Lei Lei Hairston. She still holds the scoring mark of
26.3 ppg during the playoffs as a freshmen. She finished her career as the top
scoring producer in her class with nearly 1900 points (3rd in school history), 639
rebounds (4th in school history), 607 assists (schools all time leader), 358
steals, 254 blocks (most ever for a player under 6 ft tall in Guilford
County).First player ever to not start the first sixteen games of her highschool
career and amass this type of productivity. First Team All Conference 08,09,10 and
11. First Team NC PREPS All State 2011. First Team All Conference Tournament
2008,09,11. MVP of Conference Tournament 2011. Runnerup Conference Player of the
year 2009. First Team All Region 2011. Second Team All Region 2010. Third Team All
Guilford 2010. Honorable Mention All Guilford 2009. Honorable Mention All Region 08
and 09. Don Amos All Christmas Tournament Team 2009 (led tournament with 19.3 ppg).
Eastern Guilford All Tournament Team 2010 and 2011 (led tournament with 24.3 ppg).
All Region Player of the Year 2011. Signed with Stonybrook University in Long
Island, New York. Sat out year after earning starting spot due to preseason injury.

2010: Megan Buckland: Bishop Mcguiness: 19.8 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 4.5 apg,4.8 spg, .9 bp:
The leader of the best team in this area, has been rated as one of the top players
in the country. She had the best season of her career with 594 points which is a
school record. She was the Northwest 1A/2A Player of the eyar. First Team All
District, Western Regional MVP, State Championship MVP 2010 and 2011 . Finalist for
NC Gatorade Player of the Year NC PREPS First Team All State 2011. All Conference
2009,10 and 11. Her last six games produced 123 points for a 20.5 ppg average. Over
her last ten games she had eight games of 20 or more points. She had 19 games of 20
or more points out of a 30 game schedule. She had 15 points in the title game
against Williamston and ECU signee Katie Paschal. Ranked 16th best guard in country.
She score 15 against eAST bLADEN AND ecu signee Courtney Melvin. She was the 54th
ranked player by Hoopgurlz. Played in East West Allstar game
and finished with 7 points. A Mcdonalds All American nominee. Fila All American.
After transferring over from Wesleyan Academy she finished career with with 1168
points. Had 12 points against Rockingham and Marshill signee Crystal Moore. 12
points against Dudleys and Charleston Southern signee Helen Terry and UNCG signee
Breonna Patterson. She had 26 points in game against Rivermill and Belomont Abbey
signee Makenzie Owens. The Mcguiness star finished her career with 454 rebounds,
271 assists, 256 stls, 50 blks. She signed with UNC and averaged 6.9 ppg in 5
starts out of 9 games before season ending injury.

2009:Helen Terry: Dudley: 18 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 4.2 apg, 5 spg: The minature leader of
the 3A State champs has been a starter for three years for a talented latent team.
Her quickness and pressure on the ball forced several turnovers by the opposition.
She was able to step out and hit the three. She was a first team all conference
performer for three years 2007, 2008 and 2009. Conference Player of the year in 2008
and 2009.She was named the NVP of the State playoff championship game against
Forestview and UNC signee Shannon Smith and Kelsey Harris Elon signee, when she
scored 16 points. She had 32 points against Bishop Mcguiness and Virginia signee
Erin Thompson and, Florida Gulf Coast signee Whitney Knight. She scored 22 points
against South Central and UNC signee Daniel Butts and ECU signee Jonisha Ebron. She
has had a 20 point game against Maryland Eastern Shore-Johnson C. Smith signee
Lakendra Wilkerson and 24 and 15 points against Rockingham and
Mars Hill signees Crystal Moore and HPU signee Linday Puckett. 17 points against
Hillside and Wake Forest signee Asia Williams. 17 points against Western
Alamance-Rivermill and Bemont Abbey signee Makenzie Owens, 13 points against
Western Guilford and Gardner Webb signee Catrina Green. She was named NC Preps 3A
All state in 2008 and 2009. She was selected to the East West All star game. She
was named to second team All Guilford her junior year and selected to the Pizza Hut
All Tournament team in 2007. She finished her career with nearly 1300 points. She
signed with Charleston Southern and started sveral games as a freshmen and
sophomore. She made the all freshmen team and led the team in steals.She was the
starting guard as a junior before a season ending injury at the beginning of the
New Year.

2008: Anna Freeman: Esst Davison: 18 ppg, 10 rpg, 3 bpg: The giant leader was the
key ingredient for East Davison sucessful runs. Her ability to energize her
teammates were unsurpassed. She led them to a State Championship with her
consistent play. She was named the 2A State Player of the year. Conference Player of
the year. NC Preps All State First Team. A four time All Conference performer. Three
times Conference Player of the year. Two year State championship game MVP. Highpoint
Enterprise Player of the year. Lexington Dispatch Player of the year. Davison County
Female Athlete of the year. Had 12 points against Dudley’s Helen Terry (CSU),
Breonna Patterson (UNCG), Desiree Drayton (Charlotte) and Kierra McIvor (Radford).
She has become the leader of Appalachian State and they have been perrenial winners
including a recent upset of NC State in the WNIT whom did not recruit her. Scored
over 1300 points in her career. Has been an all conference
selection for Appalachian State and is the teams leading scorer.

2006-07: Katherine Lyons: Bishop Mcguiness: 13.4 ppg, 5 rpg, 5 apg, 4 spg: One of
the most celebrated players this area has ever seen. Had offers from colleges from
all around the country as a 5’10 guard before selecting Maryland during her
sophomore year.She was News-records player of the year in 2006-07. Her 2006
campaigne she averaged 17.6 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 6.7 apg,5.6 spg. She finished her career
with 1700 points.She was selected to every all star team imaginable. Three times
first team All state. Highpoint Enterprise Player of the year. MVP of the State
Championship game and West Regional State MVP. Ranked as one of the top 100 girls
basketball players in the country. Brandon Clay group had her ranked as one of the
top guards in the nation. Every scouting service in the nation had her on their
list. The smooth guard was a leader and showed great poise on the court. Her season
scoring mark held until it was broken by Megan Buckland. She was a part of the
top recruiting class in the nation by Maryland. She played at Maryland sparingly
and transferred to Marist before giving basketball up all together..

  1. This is really a very nice article of the outstanding young athletes that earned these awards. Andy, I think that it is nice that on this site it shows actual things that has happen and the ability to add on as the years past. It also gives viewers more insight on perhaps players that they may have never seen that have performed at a very high level . Good job again by this site.
