WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The High Point University women’s golf team shot a combined 308 in the third and final round of the C&F Bank Intercollegiate to finish in eighth place out of 21 teams with a total score of 942 on Tuesday in Williamsburg, Va. Junior Jessica Neese was HPU’s top finisher in the event after carding a 76 in the final round.
“I thought the team had a steady progression from yesterday and was very happy with how we played,” head coach Vici Pate Flesher said. “Everyone seemed a lot more committed and precise today. Overall I feel like this was a good tournament for us. This is the first tournament we have played where we have scored below 320 each round and we accomplished a lot of things that we said we wanted to do heading into the weekend.”
Neese had two birdies on the round to help her turn in the Panthers’ lowest score of the day. The junior finished the tournament in a tie for 18th with a three-day score of 232 (77-79-76). Freshman Grier Bennett carded a 77 in the third round and finished in a tie for 32nd with a 54-hole score of 236 (81-78-77). The freshman finished one-stroke ahead of junior Audra McShane who ended the tournament in a tie for 37th after shooting a final-round 78 for a three-round total of 237 (80-79-78).
Sophomore Angela Gimenez carded an 81 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 50th with a total score of 241 (79-81-81) while sophomore Margaret Suchan shaved eight strokes off her second-round score with a 77 on the final day to finish in a tie for 67th with a 54-hole total of 250 (88-85-77).
Longwood shot a 309 on the final day and won the team title with a combined score of 912 after three rounds of action. The Lancers won by 10 strokes over St. Johns which came in second with a combined score of 922. St. Leo finished in third with a score of 923 while Toledo (925) and Penn (928) rounded out the top five.
Kameron Carter of Longwood claimed the individual medal with a three-day score of 221. Boston College’s Kaita Joo finished second with a 54-hole score of 224. Harin Lee of St. John’s and Jade Okamoto of Radford each carded final score of 225 to tie for third.
The Panthers return to action next week at the UNCW Lady Seahawk Classic. The two-day event will be played at the River Landing Golf Club in Wallace, N.C., beginning on March 24. The tournament will serve as the Panthers’ final warm-up before the Big South Championship on April 9.
