GC Softball Rebounds for Doubleheader Split With Methodist

The Pride softball dropped a back-and-forth game one match-up with Methodist on Wednesday but came back for a 1-0 victory in the night cap. Greensboro moves to 14-10 on the season and 5-1 in the USA South, while maintaining first place in the conference standings.

The Monarchs took an early 2-0 lead after 1.5 innings in game one. The Pride responded with a single run in each of the next four innings to take a 4-3 lead after five. Methodist struck last, however, scoring two in the top of the sixth and shutting down the Greensboro attack down the stretch to earn the 5-4 win.

Brittany Teer and Hayley Hicks each recorded a game high two hits apiece, as The Pride finished the game with seven hits. Teer also scored two runs, while Hicks knocked in two RBI.

Game two featured a pitchers dual, with Greensboro striking for the lone run of the night in the third inning. Holly Jones led off the inning with a double to right, followed by a single by Brittany Teer. Kanisha Fogg reached on a fielder’s choice that put Teer out at second, but allowed Hicks to cross home.

Starting pitcher Kelsey Sanfilippo and reliever Hannah Pennell did the rest to preserve the victory. Sanfilippo went 5.0 innings, after suffering the game one loss in relief of Jackie Nicholson, allowing five hits with five strikeouts. Pennell finished out the final 2.0 innings and worked her way out of a seventh inning jam to notch the save.

Despite scoring only one run, The Pride bats managed to come up with nine hits. Nicholson paced the attack with two hits, as eight Greensboro players recorded a hit.

The Pride will be back in action on Thursday in a rescheduled doubleheader at Ferrum. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
