College Track and Field News – Guilford Men Ranked 23rd in Division III National Ratings

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College men’s track and field team stands 23rd in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s NCAA Division III Preseason Outdoor Track and Field Outdoor rankings.

The announcement marks the first time Guilford’s track and field team has been listed in the national rankings, which are compiled using a mathematical formulae based on current national descending order lists. The purpose and methodology of the rankings is to create an index that showcases the teams that have the best potential at achieving the top spots in the national-title race.

The Quakers ranking is largely due to the performance of sophomore Jonathan Smith (Conyers, Ga./Salem). Since joining Guilford last year, Smith has garnered numerous accolades. He has Division III’s top times this spring in both the 100 and 200-meter dash. Smith ran 10.51 seconds in the 100, the fastest time in school history, in the Vertklasse Meeting Mar. 24, which earned a first-place finish. He took second in the 200 at the same meet with a school-record time of 21.10 seconds. At the Wake Forest Open Mar. 17, Smith won the 200 with a time of 21.26. He earned All-America recognition in the 100 and 200 last year and earned his first indoor All-American title earlier this month in the 60-meter dash.
