Winston-Salem State bombs Benedict College back on Thursday at NewBridge Bank Park:Moore, Jones, McLemore and Hickernell among the leaders

Travis Moore(Dudley HS), Aaron Jones(Grimsley/Gospel Light), Devin McLemore(Westchester) and Tyler Hickernell(Wesleyan) were among the leaders as the WSSU Rams bombed Benedict back on Thursday at NBBP…..from the WSSU Rams’ athletics site:

GREENSBORO, N.C. — German Reyes went 5 for 7, and Joseph Herbert pitched seven innings giving up just one hits and one run, to lead the Winston-Salem State University Rams to a 18-1 blowout victory over the Benedict College Tigers at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro, N.C.

The win moves the WSSU Rams to 21-16, while Benedict falls to 16-5.

Joseph Herbert was masterful, in going seven innings, striking out four and walking just one. He was able to keep the Benedict Tigers off the base paths, while the Rams played strong defense behind him.

Winston-Salem State scored early , as Travis Moore(Dudley HS) doubled in the bottom of the first, and German Reyes brought him home with a base hit.

In the second inning, Paco Martin doubled down the left field line, scoring Moore again, who was walked to reach base. Martin advanced to third on a wild pitch, and Reyes knocked him on a single to right field.

The Rams would break the game open in the fourth inning, scoring four run to take a 7-0 lead. They would put the game away late, scoring six runs in the seventh inning and five in the eighth to take the commanding advantage.
WSSU finished the night with 18 runs on 19 hits while committing two errors. Benedict finished with one run one four hits and one error.

German Reyes led the way for WSSU finishing the night with five hits in seven at bats. He scored twice and drove in three runs. Travis Moore finished 4 for 6 with three runs scored, and three runs batted in to go with his double and triple. Paco Martin was 3 for 5 with three runs scored, and also had three runs batted in. Aaron Jones(Grimsley HS/Gospel Light Christian School) finished the night 3 for 6 with two runs scored and one rbi, while Angel Martinez was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and two rbi’s. Devin McLemore(Westchester Country Day) had two rbi, as he finished 1 for 3 with two runs scored.

Martinez, McLemore and Brandon Harrison each were walked three times on the evening. Jacob Nunn, Andrew Smith and Michael Robbins each had one rbi.

Tyler Hickernell(Wesleyan), Ryan Vickers and Devin McLemore combined to close out the game on the mound as the trio gave up no runs or hits, walked just one and struck out three.
