GC Softball Suffers Doubleheader Sweep to Christopher Newport

The Pride softball team was dealt a pair of losses in a key USA South doubleheader with Christopher Newport on Saturday. Greensboro lost the first game, 8-3, and the second game, 1-0. Both teams entered the day atop the conference standings with two defeaats apiece.

The Captains put Greensboro in a 4-0 hole through 1.5 innings in game one. A Heather Nellis groundout in the second scored Hayley Hicks to put The Pride on the board.

Christopher Newport added two more runs in the sixth to extend the advantage to 6-1. A Nicholson groundout in the bottom of sixth sent Kanisha Fogg home and Nellis added an RBI single to narrow the gap to 6-3.

The Captains closed out the game in the seventh, putting up two runs in the top half while preventing the Greensboro offense from threatening in the bottom.

The Pride finished the game with seven hits, with three coming off the bat of Brittany Teer. Brittany Evans also contributed two hits. Jackie Nicholson started the game but failed to get out of the first while taking the loss. Kelsey Sanfillipo worked 5.2 innings with Hannah Pennell coming in to finish out the final frame.

In game two, Pennell and Greensboro shut down the Christopher Newport attack but The Pride offense managed only five hits in a 1-0 defeat. Pennell tossed a complete game, four hitter with seven strikeouts. The Captains scored their lone run in the first inning.

Evans recorded a team high two hits in the defeat.

Greensboro is now 15-13 overall and 6-4 in the USA South. The Pride will travel to Peace on Sunday for a 1 and 3 p.m. rescheduled doubleheader.
