Elon Women’s Tennis Drops Regular Season Finale at #74 UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team dropped its regular season finale on Tuesday, April 10, as the Phoenix suffered a 5-2 setback at 74th-ranked UNCG.

Elon finishes the regular season 15-8 overall and 5-5 in Southern Conference play. UNCG clinches at least a share of the regular-season league title with the win, as the Spartans improve to 15-4 (9-0 SoCon).

Despite dropping the doubles point to fall behind, 1-0, early, the duo of Jordan Johnston and Frida Jansaker improved to 19-2 on the year after defeating UNCG’s Lucy Dougherty and Niltooli Wilkins at number one doubles, 8-4. Johnston and Jansaker have won nine straight.

Jansaker helped the maroon and gold to one of its two points in the match, as the sophomore handed UNCG’s Dilara Yurtkuran a 6-1, 6-4 decision at number three. Jansaker improves to 16-4 with the victory and has won five in a row.

Viviana Stavreva battled tough for the Phoenix at number five to give Elon its only other point in the match. Against the Spartans’ Stephanie Falcon, the sophomore grinded out a 7-6 (7-5) victory in the first set before dropping a 7-5 decision in the second. In the decisive third set, Stavreva won 1-0 (10-6) for her fourth straight victory in singles play, improving to 15-6 on the year. Stavreva is 5-1 this season in three-set matches.

Maria Camara Ruiz battled hard but dropped a three-set heartbreaker at number six singles to UNCG’s Devon Sutherland, falling 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6).

The Phoenix’s last two losses have come against teams nationally ranked in the top-75.

This season marks the third time Elon has reached the 15-win plateau under head coach Elizabeth Anderson. The team is one victory shy of tying the program’s Division I record for wins in a single season.

Elon returns to action on April 19-22 for the SoCon Tournament in Charleston, S.C. The SoCon regular season concludes this Sunday, April 15, when UNCG takes on Western Carolina.
