College Baseball Final – Roanoke 12, Guilford 9

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Matt Wallman’s two-out, three-run double highlighted Roanoke College’s five-run eighth inning in the Maroons’ 12-9 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball win at Guilford College Wednesday.

The Maroons (15-18, 6-8 ODAC) took a 5-2 lead before Guilford (19-15, 7-6 ODAC) rallied and took a 9-7 lead with a four-run seventh that featured Ben Esser’s two-run single. The Quakers’ Avery Rogers (1-1) retired the first two batters in the Roanoke eighth before the Maroons loaded the bases on three straight singles. Jacob Clifton followed with an RBI walk before Wallman greeted reliever Chad Wagoner with his bases-loaded hit.

Brian Kluge, Dalton Lipes and Bradley Mattox all had three hits and two RBI for Roanoke. Ben Amos also contributed three hits, including a double. Cameron Holshouser (2-1), the fifth and final Roanoke hurler, picked up the win with 2.1 innings of one-hit relief.

Esser paced the Quakers with a game-high four hits and two RBI. Teammate D.J. Phillips added three hits, including a double, and John Macon Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Western Guilford (Western Carolina)) had three hits and two RBI.

Guilford visits Bridgewater College Saturday (4/14) for a noon doubleheader.

  1. I can’t believe that Guilford lost this game today….I was there after the Grasshoppers’ game and the Quakers were up 7-6, then 9-6 and I thought that they had it in the bag….Too many baserunners for the Maroons late in the game….

  2. Watched it online. I think there was a lot of weak pitching from both sides. 38 hits combined, are way too many to give up.
