Elon Falls to College of Charleston in SoCon Women’s Tennis Tournament

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The seventh-seeded Elon University women’s tennis team saw its season come to an end today, April 20, in the second round of the 2012 Southern Conference Championship, as the Phoenix fell, 4-0, to second-seeded College of Charleston.

Elon finishes the 2012 season with a 16-9 record, tying the 2012 team for the most victories in the single season since the program joined the Division I ranks. College of Charleston improves to 23-5 with the win.

The Cougars took a 1-0 match lead after winning the doubles point with a pair of 8-3 decisions at numbers two and three. At number one, Jordan Johnston and Frida Jansaker took on CofC’s Samantha Maddox and Irene Viana. The match ended unfinished with the Cougars holding a slim 6-5 lead. Johnston and Jansaker remain at 20-2 on the year.

Elon fell behind 2-0 after Viviana Stavreva dropped a 6-1, 6-1, decision to Jenny Falcone at number five singles. Stavreva finishes the season with a 16-7 record in singles action.

Bryn Khoury battled tough for the Phoenix at number two singles, but fell in straight sets to CofC’s Kelly Kambourelis, 6-2, 6-1.

The Cougars clinched the victory at number six singles, as Katie Lee defeated rookie Maria Camara Ruiz in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4, to take a 4-0 lead.

The 2012 season ends as one of the most successful in history for the Phoenix. The program saw its first-ever national ranking earlier this season when Johnston and Jansaker earned a No. 43 ranking by the ITA. Individually, Johnston finished the year 13-7, while Jansaker concluded the year 17-4 in singles.

The team returns all but one player on the roster heading into next season, as today marked the final contest for senior Kaylyn Smialek.
