Waiting out the rain proves worthwhile

The official box score from Saturday’s game at NewBridge Bank Park shows a game time of two hours and 19 minutes.

That does not include a rain delay which was almost as long — 2:15, to be exact. Combine those two and it was a long night at the park, but in the end Greensboro came away with a 3-2 win over Delmarva.

It was the Hoppers’ fifth straight win and kept them in first place in the Northern Division with a 12-5 record. Hickory, which beat Savannah for the third straight night, is right behind at 11-5.

After the teams played through the top of the third inning with no score, buckets of rain fell for quite awhile. When things finally cleared, the grounds crew set about working its magic to get the field ready to play again.

Of course, things had changed. Both starting pitchers, Adam Conley for the Hoppers and Eduardo Rodriguez for the Shorebirds, were done for the night. Devin Jones took over for the Birds and the Hoppers immediately turned a walk, an infield hit, a wild pitch, a stolen base and back-to-back sacrifice flies into two runs. Ryan Rieger and Josh Adams got the RBIs. The third run scored in the fourth inning when Ryan McIntyre tripled and came in on a wild pitch.

With Conley gone, the Hoppers turned to Johnny Omahen and he responded with three scoreless innings to pick up the win. Brad Mincey pitched the seventh and eighth and James Nygren threw the ninth.
