Elon Track and Field Sits Fourth After Day One of SoCon Outdoors

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Elon track and field team compiled 31 points in the first day of competition at the 2012 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships with six events scored. The Phoenix set four school records today, April 21, and sits fourth out of the 12 conference teams.

Suzanne Martin broke her school record in the javelin with a throw of 41.76m that placed her secon and Jennifer Jarvis finished eighth with a heave of 37.17m. Both freshmen were named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team for their performances.

Allyson Oram finished third in the 10,000-meter run with a new Elon record of 36:29.08. Morgan Denecke claimed eighth in the event after posting a 37:57.10.

In the hammer throw, Alyssa Girvin broke her school record with a toss of 155’5” to take third. Charlise Morgan earned fifth with a throw of 143’7” that also bettered the previous record.

Amy Salek qualified in first for the 400-meter dash finals with a preliminary time of 54.94 and fifth in the 200-meter dash with an Elon record time of 24.50. Bria Bell also qualified for the 400m finals in fourth with a 55.88 and the 200m finals in sixth with a time of 24.68.

In the preliminaries of the 400-meter hurdles, Veronica Luedke qualified in first with a time of 1:01.71. Dana Cataldo posted the best time for the Phoenix in the 100-meter dash preliminaries with a 12.47 for 11th.

Louise Prevoteau sits in second of the heptathlon after four events with a point total of 2,793. The freshman finished second in the high jump (5’2.5”), third in the 100m hurdles (15.11), fourth in the 200m (26.54) and seventh in the shot put (30’10.5”). Prevoteau also claimed eighth in the long jump with a distance of 5.31m, earning all-freshman honors.

Claire Smith reached a mark of 3.15m in the pole vault to claim 10th. In other distance events, Emily Tryon finished fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:27.70, while Jenny Gallagher earned all-freshman honors after taking 10th with a 13:10.05. Jackie Madden was Elon’s top finisher in the 800-meter run after posting a 2:20.48 for 20th.

The SoCon Outdoor Championships will conclude tomorrow, April 22, at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
