SALEM, Va. – Fourth-seeded Roanoke College claimed a 5-0 victory over number-five Guilford College Saturday in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Women’s Tennis Tournament quarterfinal.
The Maroons (13-6) advance to play top-seeded Washington and Lee University next Saturday (4/28) at Randolph-Macon College in the semifinals. Guilford ends its best season since 2008 with a 9-9 overall record.
Roanoke scored three points by taking each doubles match, including two tight contests. The number-two tandem of Jennifer Antoszyk and Lucy Webb claimed an 8-6 win over Guilford rookies Haley Andrews and Allison Hewitt. Roanoke’s Haley Goodes and Brianna Carroll needed extra points to down Guilford’s Adelaide Ayres and Dominique Crespo, 9-7.
The Maroons clinched the victory with Corbin Leitch’s 6-1, 6-0 win over Natalie Sutton at second singles and Antoszyk’s straight-set, third-singles win over Guilford’s Kim Kleimeier. With the match’s outcome determined, the remaining singles contests were not finished.
Guilford head coach Dave McCain’s team has no seniors and expects all eight letter winners back for the 2012-13 season.
