College Baseball Final – Hampden-Sydney 13, Guilford 8

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Hampden-Sydney College banged out 21 hits in Friday’s 13-8 win over Guilford College Friday in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Tournament at City Stadium.

The sixth-seeded Tigers (14-26) advance to play Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in another elimination game. The loss bounces fifth-seeded Guilford (21-20) from the six-team tournament and ends the Quakers’ best season since 2006.

Erick Herrmann led Hampden-Sydney’s offense with four hits and Patrick Kuhns went three-for-six with three RBI. Kuhns’ two-run single highlighted the Tigers’ five-run fourth inning that turned a 4-3 deficit into an 8-4 lead they never relinquished.

Guilford made it an 8-6 game in the bottom of the fourth on RBI hits by D.J. Phillips and Kent Peterson. The Tigers replaced starter Dan Nicoll with Luke Rabiej (2-4) in the fourth with one out and two runners on. The junior left-hander worked out of the jam by fanning Zack Montalbano and Justin Pittman (Archdale, N.C./Trinity) with runners on second and third.

Hampden-Sydney went ahead 9-6 in the top of the fifth on Christian Hamlett’s sacrifice fly. After Guilford left the bases loaded in the sixth, the Tigers went up 11-6 in the seventh on a Jordan Wind sacrifice fly and Kuhns’ third RBI of the game.

The Quakers’ Casey Mann hit an RBI double in the seventh and scored on Jordan Slate’s (Lexington, N.C./North Davidson) single to make it 11-8, but Rabiej stranded Slate at third by retiring Phillips and Smith.

The Tigers regained a five-run lead in the eighth with two more and turned double plays in both the eighth and ninth innings to quash the Quakers’ comeback hopes.

Rabiej fanned six in 5.2 innings of relief. Hunter Lewis scored three times and also had three hits, including a double, and an RBI.

Slate paced Guilford’s offense with four hits, including two doubles, and two stolen bases. John Macon Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Western Guilford (Western Carolina) went two-for-five with his school record-tying 13th homer, a two-run blast in the third that tied the game at 3-3. Peterson, Pittman and Ben Esser also had two hits for the Quakers.

  1. @Alumni if you were a true “alumni” then you would know that this season guilford hasn’t claimed this many wins since 2006. Do some research.
