College Women’s Lacrosse Final – #15 Washington and Lee 18, Guilford 10

LEXINGTON, Va. – Alli Shearin scored five goals and Maddie McKaig added three goals and three assists in Washington and Lee University’s 18-10 win over Guilford College Wednesday in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament semifinal.
The top-seeded Generals (14-4), ranked 15th in this week’s United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division III Coaches’ Poll, advance to the ODAC Tournament final against the winner of Wednesday night’s semifinal between second-seeded Roanoke College and number-three Lynchburg College.

Guilford, seeded fourth in the six-team field, concludes the best season in school history with an 11-7 overall record.
Washington and Lee raced to a 5-0 lead less than five minutes into the game. Margaret Klein scored consecutive goals 11 seconds apart just over two minutes into the game. Shearin made the score 3-0 21 seconds after Klein’s goals. McKaig and Alex Van Horn tallied 21 seconds apart two minutes later before the Quakers’ got on the board at the 24:17 mark on E’leyna Garcia’s first goal of the game.

The Generals scored six of the half’s final eight goals, two by Greta Witter, which opened an 11-3 Washington and Lee halftime advantage.

The Quakers came out strong in the second half, scoring four of the period’s first six goals. The first of four second-half Summer Frazier tallies drew Guilford to within 13-7 with 22:01 left in regulation. The teams traded goals before Washington and Lee reeled off three straight scores, two by Shearin, which made it a 17-8 game with 7:33 remaining.

Witter finished with four points on three goals and an assist for Washington and Lee. Meade Brewster added a goal and two helpers, plus four draw controls. Klein totaled three points on two goals and one assist. Cara Mulligan played over 57 minutes in goal and made all seven of Washington and Lee’s saves. She also picked up a team-high three ground balls.

Garcia’s game-high six points paced the Quakers and helped her set Guilford’s season scoring record with 80 points. She and Frazier shared the team lead with 57 goals this year, which ties Tina Beahan’s ‘97 school standard set in 1996. Junior goalie Liza Mettler recorded 10 saves and three ground balls.
