New baseball coach coming soon to UNCG and I wonder who they might select??? Anybody got any predictions on this new hire? Do you go way outside on this hire and make it a large-scale national search or do you look local and go with insight into the area territory like a Keith Shumate(formerly of N.C. A&T) and bring on/in Alan Ashkinazy as his chief assistant with Austin Love(formerly of N.C. A&T) and Dustin Ijames, along with Jarrett Santos if Ijames and Santos are interested in sticking around…Maybe John Barrow at GTCC would like to come on board and work with some sort of Ashkinazy, Shumate, Love, Santos or Ijames set-up….Just scratching the surface here and what do you think? Look inside or go way outside and begin that national search??? Just a few thoughts to get you going…..
UNCG in the past year of so has made moves to bring in a new men’s soccer coach(Michael Parker stepped down), new women’s soccer coach(Eddie Radwanski took the job at Clemson), new men’s basketball coach(Mike Dement stepped aside), new women’s basketball coach(Lynne Agee retired), they dropped the wrestling program and then last week they let the baseball coach(Mike Gaski) and the softball coach go….That’s six coaches and one program eliminated altogether and then it looks like in hindsight, if your name was Mike, it was time to ‘Take a Hike’, with Parker, Dement and Gaski….
Just some local observations…..
I think UNCG will make a hard run at Elon’s HC Mike Kennedy. He would not have to move his family and the man can obviously coach. If they do hire Shumate I think he should hire the Adams kid that played at Elon and is familiar with the area. I keep hearing from several different people that he is trying to get into college coaching and he has done an outstanding job with his high school pitchers. One final thought I would say hire him because this area is filled with talent and he would be able to keep the talent at home because he is well liked and known by many
Shumate, no way,,,,just ask any of his old players from AT&T,,,Ashkinazy, no way, he does not have experience with D1 recruiting.
UNC-G should go wider to look and hire a consulting firm to get a number of applicants from DII schools or an assistant from a D1…No way that they should look local. That is being short sighted.
If Kennedy leaves Elon, then that would open the door for Jack Mckeon.

If Kevan Moore is still checking in, I wanted to let him know that the Hagerstown Suns who were just in town early this week to face the Grasshoppers, they had some players he may remember in Greg Holt(West Forsyth/UNC) and Brian Goodwin(Rocky Mount/UNC) and the Suns also had Lenny Dykstra’s son, Cutter Dykstra, but he did not play in the three-game series…..
What ever happened to Mike Roberts who used to be the coach at UNC before Mike Fox came in…Didn’t Mike Roberts have a son Brian Roberts who played with the Orioles????? Where is Mike Roberts now, he knows the UNC system to a certain degree….
Alan has some college experience. He was the assistant to Coach Barrow at GTCC and that may not qualify him, but he does have some experience…….

Kennedy at Elon, Link Jarrett (asst coach at Auburn-former player at FSU where the AD came from), Mike Rikard- Red Sox crosschecker and UNCG alum and former player are the three to watch. I also hear that the salary for this position will be 6 figures, pretty much doubling what Gaski got, so I would anticipate a big name or at least a coach from a big name school. I would look for an assistant from an ACC or SEC school to be frontrunners- especially if that is true about the salary.
Mike Roberts would not be an improvement, nor would Shumate. Schnabel wouldn’t be a bad hire.

Are you guys kidding with Alan, John Barrow, etc? Kennedy is an Elon grad and would never come to UNCG. This hire will be someone with college coaching experience, not some local dude who keeps all his trophies from 8 and 9 year-old baseball successes! They have no interest in keeping local players in town unless they can play at a high level like Ogburn, Orth, etc.

Just for the record, I do have major college experience (Tulane and App St.) and haven’t kept any of trophies from when I was 8 or 9. I am also smart enough to know that I have about as much of a shot as you do in getting the UNCG job. Of course it would be nice, and I would never turn it down. However, I am a realist and with the names I have heard being bantered about for this job, I know that for me to even think about applying for this job would be a monumental waste of time on my part.
Don’t be so quick to think that Kennedy won’t leave either!
Barrow is right. Kennedy may be willing to leave if they pay him enough. UNCG has better facilities and they are public which is easier to recruit. I have heard it is his job if he wants it. The bottom line is whoever it is should be able to recruit and win games

For the record there are plenty of local kids that go to UNCW, App etc that could easily be very good players at UNCG
If Shumate were given a chance they would be getting top notch coach. Knowledge for baseball is unreal Someone said it earlier he would get good local talent plus be able to go get people out of state He set school record for wins at A&T just about his last 6 or 7 years. Plus that was with no paid assistant and zero money to go get out of state guys I enjoyed watching him coach at G this year and how he helped the guys. UNCG has a tough job on finding the right guy. But Shumate seems like a great option to me being older than coach Shumate and seeing what he was delt at A&T and able to win those games he would be top notch at a great place like G

I totally agree with Baseball fan on this. Keith Shumate is a great individual and coach. His style is encouragement not tearing down. Wonderful baseball knowledge. As was stated earlier just look at what he did with A&T which certainly was not a baseball school before he arrived.
Greg Starbuck would be the perfect man for the job!
Kennedy will be the coach at UNCG and Starbuck will get the job at Elon.
Another name to look at is Brian McGee, former Greensboro College assistant and current Lake Erie College (DII) head coach. He has taken a team that transiioned from D III to D II with a lot of success. Lake Erie’s program was not good before he got there, never even qualified for their conference tournament. In his first season there, the team reached the semis of the conference tourney. The next year he transioned to D II with a D III roster and joined one of the most difficult D II conferences in the nation, the GLIAC. His team finished third in that conference this year, beat top 10 and recent national champ Grand Valley State three times at GVS and made the semi-finals of the conference tournament. This was also the first year he played with a full roster of scholarship players that he recruited. He was also the the main recruiter at Greensboro during their most successful seasons.

I have been hearing the name Greg Starbuck for this job back before Christmas. Everyone knew Gaski needed a miracle this year to keep his job.

Greg Starbuck is in his 14th season on the Elon coaching staff and his eighth as the associate head coach to Mike Kennedy. Starbuck is Elon’s recruiting coordinator and serves as the primary hitting instructor. He also works with the outfielders and is the primary baserunning instructor.
“Buck” has been instrumental in the success that Elon has enjoyed during its decade as a NCAA Division I member. In each of his 13 seasons with the Phoenix, Elon has ranked among the conference leaders in several offensive and defensive categories.
Under Starbuck’s guidance in 2009, Elon set new program records in runs scored (604), hits (711), doubles (137), home runs (138) and RBI (558).
The team has won at least 30 games in 12 of his 13 seasons and has eclipsed the 40-win plateau three times, including a school-record 45 victories in 2006.
Starbuck has coached 39 players that have received first or second-team all-conference honors.
I agree on the 4 UNCG players, but what ever happened to Danny Schneider?
Danny got to AA ball,retired mid season a while back, and now lives in Boone. He was UNCG’s first baseball signee.
They only recruited and signed one local high school kid this year and from what I hear he is a good one they advertised as a pitcher only but from my memory of high school and showcase ball may be their best option at 1st base. Big boy can crush the ball and hits for an average of 400. There are several good candidates available and no affiliation with UNCG but Jake Robbins is a name I have heard also. Young, enthusiastic, knows the game and took kids from several showcase teams including Dirtbags and had great success in major showcase events.
What about Neil Avent?

Matt Tomlin and Just Aquilante must be considered for the top 4 players. Link Jarrett will be new coach.
as far as the all time greats dont forget about “slick” nick phillips ? could steal bases like lou brock. dude was a stud and was just as good out at the corner bar at nights. Pooch la looch had some big time game pwoer as well. dont forget about dennis finizio, he was talented as anyone but never transpired. and also jon’ the don juan” karwacki, could play defense like steve sax.
DeAngelis was a legend. I remember him eating at Haybles Hearth every monday night and he would leave a poot cup in his seat everytime.
