UNCG Track: Thompson Earns Capital One Academic All-District Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG senior Joey Thompson has earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-District 3 Men’s Track & Field/Cross Country Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday.

Thompson will now go on the ballot for Capital One Academic All-America honors, which will be announced on June 21.

An Academic All-Southern Conference selection for the last three years, Thompson graduated in May with a 3.96 grade point average in finance. At the NCAA Cross Country Championships in November, Thompson won the NCAA’s Elite 89 award, given to the individual with the highest GPA at the finals site of each NCAA championship.

He was also a USTFCCCA All-Academic selection this season.

The Columbia, Md., native finished third at the SoCon Cross Country Championships this season and eighth at the NCAA Southeast Regional to earn all-region honors. He earned one of two national at-large bids to the NCAA Championships, joining teammates Paul Chelimo and Ashley Schnell, who were automatic qualifiers. Thompson became the first runner in school history to earn an at-large bid.

During the indoor track campaign, Thompson helped the Spartans set a school record in winning the distance medley relay at the SoCon Championships.

Thompson also set a school record during the outdoor season, turning in a time of 8:59.45 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Stanford Invitational. He recently completed his career in the event at the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Jacksonville, Fla.
