UNCG Tennis: Several Past, Present and Future Spartans Compete at Crown N.C. State Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Several past, present and future UNCG tennis players and coaches participated in the Crown N.C. State Closed Championships at Greensboro’s Spencer Love Tennis Center last week.

Current players representing UNCG were Cameron Smith and Jimmy Roueche, while men’s tennis head coach Thomas Mozur and women’s tennis assistant Erica Zabkar also played. Incoming freshman Will Albright and former players Paul Goode, Andrew Clark, Andrey Bubnov and Tony Mule also represented the Spartan men’s program.

In the men’s open singles draw, Mule, a two-time All-Southern Conference selection for the Spartans, made it the farthest, falling to eventual champion Andrew Carter in the semifinals, 6-1, 2-6, 7-5.

Goode advanced to the quarterfinals, while Roueche and Bubnov, another two-time All-SoCon pick for UNCG, made it to the round of 16. Smith and Albright fell in the round of 32.

In the consolation bracket, Smith and Albright both fell in the semifinals.

Goode and Mule reached the finals of the Men’s Open Doubles draw, with Goode and partner William Noblitt downing Mule and Carter, 7-5, 6-2.

The duo of Albright and Roueche made it to the quarterfinals, while Clark and Roueche and Mozur and Bubnov, Mozur’s former player and assistant coach, reached the round of 16.

In mixed doubles, Albright and Clare Cox fell in the quarterfinals. Graham Pearson and Zabkar, an All-SoCon player for UNCG as well as current assistant coach, picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Adriana Hernandez and Nathan Marrow before falling in the semifinals.
