Sunday was fun day for Greensboro Grasshoppers:Bill on Baseball with Hoppers re-discover hitting and fun

Hoppers re-discover hitting and fun

Some of the older and wiser heads with the Hoppers — namely manager David Berg and hitting coach Frank Moore — had been saying that all the team needed was a big inning to snap out of a hitting slump.

“It’s just baseball,” Moore said before Sunday’s game. “It can turn around in a hurry. This game is about grinding it out every day.”

It turned around in a hurry Sunday. The Hoppers drubbed Lexington 13-4, snapping a five-game losing streak in which they had scored a total of four runs.

And they got an extra benefit when second-place Hagerstown lost to Kannapolis 6-2 to snap its seven-game winning streak. The double whammy pushed the Hoppers to a lead of 2 1/2 games with seven to play in the first half.

Winning the decisive way they did was important, especially driving in runners in scoring position. They had been 0-for-20 in the first two games of the series but were 8-for-22 in that situation Sunday.

There was also another element at work.
