Hoppers on verge of division title

Three cases of champagne will have to wait another day.

The Hoppers did what they needed to do Thursday night, beating Charleston 4-3 at NewBridge Bank Park. Then they waited for the result of the Hagerstown-West Virginia contest. If the Suns had lost, that would have wrapped up the first-half Northern Division title and a spot in the SAL playoffs. A celebration would have ensued in the Greensboro locker room and the champagne would have been uncorked.

But the Suns rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning and made them stand up for an 8-6 victory. So the Hoppers put the celebration on hold. They need one more win — or one more Hagerstown loss — in the next three days to clinch things.

“We just have to take of business (Friday), that’s my mentality,” said manager David Berg.
