Hoppers finish first half with flourish

You had to wonder if the Hoppers might have a little bit of a letdown after wrapping up a playoff berth Saturday, but they didn’t let it happen.

Pitcher Josh Hodges set the tone and was backed by just enough offense for the Hoppers to beat Charleston 4-2 Sunday. They finished the first half of the season with a 46-24 record and the Northern Division pennant. Asheville won the Southern Division with a 47-23 mark.

The game didn’t matter of terms of the standings but it mattered to the players. Hodges pitched eight innings and picked up the victory to improve to 5-4. He threw shutout ball for seven innings and gave up two runs in the eighth but left with a 3-2 lead. Brad Mincey recorded the save in the ninth.

Hodges had the RiverDogs hitting the ball on the ground much of the afternoon, including seven groundouts to second baseman Austin Barnes.
