‘Shooting the Gap’ with the HS Football season and busy traffic just around the corner

I was making the jump across traffic this morning, on my morning run and it all comes down to, do you wait for the traffic to stop before you cross over to the other side of the street, or do you ‘Shoot the Gap’? I chose and I usually do, to go ahead and ‘Shoot the Gap’…..

It made think back that old football term this morning and I was trying to remember if it was an offensive term or an defensive term…Does the runningback hit a gap or a hole??? You have all of those holes numbered and they are holes and not gaps with the 1, 3, 5, 7 side and the 2, 4, 6, 8 side, depending on if you are playing odd or even, on the right or left side….

The gaps are on the defensive side of the ball and the linebackers and even in some cases, the defensive backs, are known for ‘Shooting the Gap’….Hit that gap as a stunting LB, or line up in a certain gap, if you are a defensive lineman….

‘Shoot the Gap’…..It always amazes me how the old sports terms continue to turn up in ‘real life’ situations on a daily basis, for example in cases like crossing the street at the busy intersection, when you have to decide if you want to ‘Shoot the Gap’….

Sometimes if you don’t ‘Shoot the Gap’, you will be waiting all day for the traffic to clear….Sometimes you just have to “Go For It”…….
