LOUISBURG, NC – Louisburg College Director of Athletics Michael Holloman has announced the hiring of Keith Shumate to the position of Head Baseball Coach.

“We are excited about the hiring of Coach Shumate,” said Holloman. “He did a great job at North Carolina A&T State University as he made that program better each year which will help him lead this program effectively. He is a great hire for this program as he has a great deal of experience as a head coach and he knows what needs to be done to keep the Hurricanes at the top of the Region and the country.”

Shumate spent 15 seasons as the Head Baseball Coach at A&T where he left his post with over 300 wins. Under his direction, the Aggies made the conference championship game four out of his last seven years and picked up one regular season and one tournament title. Prior to NC A&T, Shumate spent three seasons coaching at Grimsley High School in Greensboro.

Keith attended Western Carolina University where he played baseball under legendary coach Jack Leggett. While at WCU he also earned his Bachelor of Science in Education with an emphasis on Spanish.

Shumate will assume his duties immediately as the Hurricane baseball team will commence their offseason workouts in late August.

  1. Keith is an outstanding person and coach. I hate that a local team could not find a spot for him (selfish of me I know) but this is good for Keith. Best of luck to you in this new position. I’m sure you will do a great job just as you did in building a program at A&T.

  2. Congrats to Coach Shumate. I am a former player and saw first hand what he did at A&T without one ounce of support. He laid out great plans for us to succeed and was committed to the success of the program 110% of the time. I honestly look back and wonder how he was able to do what he did with what he was given. Good luck coach

  3. Shumate better get ready. Region X is not the MEAC- quality team every weekend! He will have more support than A&T, but the competition level day in and day out is WAY better than what he faced during his tenure at A&T

  4. I played in both conferences and overall we played better teams at A&T. Conference wise there were better teams in Region X, but we played N.C. State, UNC, ECU, App and others out of conference that made the overall schedule tougher. I still say one of the top 5 teams I played against in college was the Louisburg team of 2005. Coach Shumate will be prepared and has never taken any aspect of the game lightly that is for sure.
