Western Guilford Athletic Director Jim Clontz stepping down:Will leave office August 31, after 40 years in Guilford County education

Jim Clontz will step down as the Western Guilford High School Athletic Director at the end of this month(August 31)…..

Coach Clontz, as we like to call him, has been the AD at WG for the past 9 years…..

Jim Clontz has been involved in Guilford County education for 40 years as a teacher, coach and Athletic Director….

Mr. Clontz came to Southeast Guilford High School as a coach back in 1972, after graduating from Appalachian State University…..Clontz began his career at the Southeast Guilford Junior High, as PE teacher(taught there 8 years)) and while teaching physical education at SEG Junior High, he was an assistant football and basketball coach at Southeast Guilford High School….He later became head football, girls basketball and track coach at Southeast High School….

Coach Clontz coached football for 31 years at Southeast Guilford and he was the head football coach for the Falcons for two years….He served as the assistant football coach at SEG for/under Bill Slayton, Ted Perry, Bob Kime, Richard Kemp, Tommy Norwood and Ken Helms and then took over the Falcon team the two years prior to his coming to Western Guilford…..

Jim Clontz was the girls head basketball coach at Southeast Guilford for 20 years and he took his Lady Falcons to 5 NCHSAA Regional Tournaments….Coach Clontz was the head Track and Field coach at SEG for 17 years……

Coach Clontz came to Western Guilford 9 years ago and served in the AD capacity and had limited teaching duties at WG….AD’s have not been allowed to coach in the Guilford County School system for the past several years and the AD job has become almost a full-time job for many of the county’s athletic leaders…..

Again, Jim Clontz will step down after 40 years of service to the Guilford County Schools system on August 31 and he plans to have back surgery soon after that date, as his back-related health issues have become too much to bear in their current state….Coach Clontz had back surgery last year toward the end of the WG Hornet football season and now he needs to get that back fixed up, once and for all….

We wish Coach Jim Clontz the best in retirement and we thank him for his 40 years of service to the Guilford County Schools system……..

The interview process is in progress, as Western conducts their search, for the new Western Guilford Athletic Director…..

Jim Clontz:269 wins 6 conference Titles 5 Sectional Titles… 5 Coach of the Year honors…. and the Rich Brenner Lifetime Achievement Award Winner

  1. Congratulations Coach Clontz. There are not enough good things i can say about you. You were the guy that actually got me into coaching way back when. You have touched so many lives. I will always remember playing, coaching with and coaching for you, so many memories. You are a great man, coach and educatorand i know you will be sorely missed at Western just as you have been by SE. i wish you all the best in the world. Thank you for everything.

  2. Congratulations Coach Clontz!! You may be retiring as a Hornet but you will always be a Falcon. A well deserved rest after 40 years in GC. Thanks for being my friend. See you around. F1

    Well said Coach Loose!!

  3. Congrats Coach Clontz! Coach Clontz has been a friend of mine since 1980. Coach is a workaholic. Always giving his time to others. Jim coached, taught, worked on fields, broke down film, scouted, did laundry, supervised, counseled others and been a friend to many. It is a shame he left SE but at the time a good move for him and a gain for Western. Take care of yourself and your family and enjoy retirement. Jim, now is a good time to relax! You deserve it.
