CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. – Guilford College alumni Andrew Biggadike ’02 and Jeff Osberg ’06 both advanced to match play of the U.S. Amateur Golf Championship Tuesday. The pair was among the low 64 scorers after 36 holes in the 312-man field competing on the Common Ground Golf Course and Cherry Hills Country Club.
Biggadike, who shot two-under-par 68 Monday on the Common Ground course, carded a two-over 73 Tuesday on the Cherry Hills layout. He opened his round from the 10th hole and made the turn at three-over-par after bogeys on the par-four 13th, 16th and 18th holes. Biggadike heated up on the front nine with four straight birdies on holes 3-6. He bogeyed his final three holes of the round to finish with a two-day 141, which ranked 25th in the field. The three-time PING All-American is making his first U.S. Amateur appearance.
Osberg shot a five-under 65, the day’s low score on the par-70, 7,427-yard Common Ground layout. He carded a two-under 69 Monday at Cherry Hills and his seven-under 134 after 36 holes shared second place with University of Washington sophomore Cheng-Tsung Pan. The two stood two strokes behind University of Alabama All-American Bobby Wyatt, who took medalist honors with a nine-under 64-68-132. Osberg’s second round featured one bogey and six birdies, including three on the final three holes. A 2006 PING Second Team All-American at Guilford, Osberg reached match play for the first time in his three U.S. Amateur appearances.
The 2012 U.S. Amateur consists of 36 holes of stroke play followed by six rounds of match play, which begins Wednesday at the par-71, 7,403-yard Cherry Hills course. The championship is scheduled to conclude with a 36-hole final on Sunday, starting at 8:30 a.m. MDT.
The U.S. Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
