Trailing only 21-20 at the end of two quarters, Southwest came out flat in the third quarter and was swamped by the Falcon defense. The Cowboys turned the ball over on its first two possessions, both leading to easy scores the opposite way.
Southeast scored 47 unanswered points during that stretch.
“We had them beat in the first half,” running back Larry Edwards said. “We made way too many little mistakes and didn’t take care of the ball. We had one costly fumble at the beginning of the third quarter that really changed the momentum of this game very quickly.”
Edwards ran for 97 yards on 14 carries, but was held to negative two rushing yards in the second half. Edwards, a four-year starter, was an All-Conference selection a season ago.
“I’m not concerned about my personal performance,” Edwards said. “We need to get the W. I’m not satisfied after tonight.”
Christian Shipman chipped in on offense in the first half for the Cowboys rushing for 63 yards, scoring all three touchdowns.
