East Carolina Football Summer Camp Breakout with Pirate update as game one approaches

Justin Venable(Southeast Guilford), Rocco Scarfone(Northern Guilford), Jonathan White(High Point Central) and Will Foxx(Page/ORMA) are all down there at ECU…All four of these young men are fighting for playing time this season and as a senior, it is time for Justin Venable to start….He can handle the job and he will make good things happen…His recovery speed alone can carry him at his DB spot and Scarfone is loaded with speed too and he has added much needed pounds that allow him to now lower the boom….Big Will and Big Jay are also looking to play, as ECU faces Appalachian State in the Pirates’-Moutaineers’ season opener…….

PIRATES CLOSE OUT ’12 PRESEASON CAMP

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Head Coach Ruffin McNeill officially completed his third fall
camp at East Carolina as the Pirates wrapped up the NCAA-recognized preseason period with a soggy two-hour, shells-only workout Monday morning on Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex.

McNeill guided ECU through opening individual and positional drills before spending
a combined 35 minutes in skeleton and team-on-team segments that featured
competition between preseason depth chart members on both sides of the ball in lieu of scout squads.

With the start of classes, the Pirates will return to their in-season schedule which
regularly will include daily 3:30 p.m. practices Tuesday through Thursday, a Sunday
night session and an off day each Monday. ECU will make one exception to the
aforementioned slate with an off-date tomorrow to acclimate itself to the first day
of school.

“I’m looking forward to returning to our regular routine and getting into a
game-type mode for the rest of this week,” McNeill said. “I thought we accomplished
what we needed to during camp with our execution, tempo and football intelligence. I’ve said this before, but I really like the attitude and work ethic this team has.”

McNeill also indicated the program’s initial depth chart of the season is still
being discussed and formalized, and will be released prior to his first press
conference of the season next Monday.

“I was happy with the way we closed things out today,” McNeill added. “Both sides
the ball looked strong and were really flying around the field. We talked about
everyone from the coaches to the players having the right pace and we met that goal.”

NOTES: OWR Antonio Cannon (concussion) was cleared for “full-go” status and
participated in Monday’s practice … DE Matt Milner (left foot) and IWR Quataye Smyre (left leg also experienced limited action for the first time in more than a week to 10 days after suffering their injuries … NT Michael Brooks (concussion), OLB Jacob Geary (left leg), OLB Montese Overton (concussion), CB Leonard Paulk (right knee) and OWR Brandon Weymann (right shoulder) remained sidelined … RB Vintavious Cooper rejoined the team and worked out Monday morning after missing Saturday’s scrimmage because of bereavement leave.
