College Women’s Lacrosse News – Sarah Berheide Named Head Coach at Guilford College

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College Director of Athletics Tom Palombo announced the hiring of Sarah Berheide as the Quakers’ head women’s lacrosse coach Tuesday. Berheide replaces Matthew Grosso, who resigned in May after eight seasons to accept the head women’s lacrosse post at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.

Berheide becomes Guilford’s 10th head women’s lacrosse coach after spending the last three years at Bard (N.Y) College. She moved the Raptors’ women’s lacrosse program from a club team to varsity status in 2010. Bard improved from a one-win campaign its inaugural season to a five-win season last spring. A bright spot from the 2012 team was freshman Joanna Regan, who became Bard’s first All-Liberty League honoree after leading the league in ground balls and caused turnovers per game. Berheide also served as an assistant athletics director at Bard with oversight of the department’s front desk and six club teams. She also coached the Nor’easter Lacrosse Club Team for three seasons.

Before coaching at Bard, Berheide served an assistant coach, first at Siena College, and then at Trinity College (Conn.), where she earned her master’s degree in American studies. She helped Trinity reach the second round of the 2008 NCAA Division III Women’s Lacrosse playoffs and also assisted Bantams’ field hockey team.

Berheide graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in women’s studies from Skidmore College in 2006. She earned All-America recognition in both lacrosse and field hockey and was named to the 2005-06 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® College Division Women’s At-Large Second Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Berheide won a combined four all-region and six all-conference awards. As a lacrosse goalie, she set every major program record, including goals against average (7.01) and save percentage (.594). As a field hockey defender, she anchored a unit that played in three NCAA Tournaments. The former Saratoga Springs (N.Y.) High School standout won Skidmore’s Senior Athlete Award, the Tim Brown Scholar Athlete and the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete Awards.

Berheide will marry Jonathan Lamphier Sept. 1. The couple will relocate from New York to Greensboro where Berheide inherits 12 letterwinners from Guilford’s record-setting 2012 unit. The Quakers expect to return six starters and four all-conference performers from last year’s 11-7 team.
