HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University women’s basketball team will open the 2012-13 season on Nov. 10 against East Tennessee State at the Millis Center, head coach DeUnna Hendrix announced on Wednesday. The Panthers will play a challenging non-conference schedule with games against Kentucky, Xavier, Davidson and Alabama–Birmingham, before beginning Big South play.
“Our non-conference schedule is definitely tough,” Hendrix said. “We are going to learn how to be road warriors but ultimately it will prepare us for the conference tournament. I really like that we face big-time opponents on the road and at home. We will also see different styles of play and different environments that will have the team ready for Big South games.”
Panther fans will have an opportunity to watch the team on Nov. 4 in an exhibition against Winston-Salem State at 2 p.m. at the Millis Center. The regular season will kick off on Nov. 10 against ETSU. Bluefield College (Nov. 25) and UAB (Nov. 27) will also make the trip to High Point this season.
High Point will hit the road for some tough games in non-conference play, including trips to Furman (Nov. 13), Kentucky (Nov. 17), Xavier (Nov. 19) and Davidson (Dec. 5). The Panthers will take part in the Navy Classic in Annapolis, Md. HPU will face Monmouth on Nov. 30 at 3:30 p.m. and play either Navy or East Carolina the following day.
High Point opens the conference slate with a trip to Winthrop on Dec. 18. HPU hosts its first Big South game on Jan. 3 against Charleston Southern at the Millis Center. Gardner-Webb will make the trip on Jan. 5 for a 3:30 p.m. tip. League play wraps up with home games against Campbell (Feb. 28) and Coastal Carolina (March 2).
The league features a combined men’s and women’s tournament with all games hosted by Coastal Carolina at its new arena in Conway, S.C., March 5-10. The women’s quarterfinal games will be played on March 8, the semifinals on March 9 and the championship game on March 10.
